Your subconscious is responsible for making on the fly acceptance or rejection decisions based upon past information. There is a barrier between subconscious and conscious thought called the critical mind that acts as the watchdog. Therefore, if you have learned that smoking fulfils a certain need, your subconscious will make the decision to smoke without consulting your conscious mind. If you make a conscious decision that contradicts the subconscious decidion, the critical mind stops it. This is why simply making a conscious decision to stop smoking usually fails.
Hypnosis is a method of getting past the mind’s watch dog, the critical mind, to directly change things about the way that you think. That’s it!
