There are few things we know about Reiki from observation and experimentation:
• Channeling Reiki causes measurable change in the practitioner.
o The human body and its organs have bio magnetic fields surrounding them. The hands of a Reiki healer will appear to have a much stronger magnetic field surrounding them then a non-healer. This has been measured at 0.0002 gauss (hundreds of times higher than a normal reading)
o The hands of a Reiki practitioner channeling Reiki will grow hot to the touch and the temperature can be definitively measured.
• The body has chakras, an aura and meridians meant to carry or hold energy, the mechanics of which science can barely sense and has yet to define.
• Reiki never runs out and does not leave the practitioner drained as opposed to consciously using the body’s own energy. This can be experienced by trying both styles of healing.
• Reiki can be used along with any other healing modality or belief system. It does not depend upon belief and does not fail on someone who does not believe.
• Anyone or anything can be attuned and/or treated with Reiki
• Reiki flow is the same from both hands

However, although we can experience these things about Reiki, science falls short when it comes to explaining WHY Reiki works. It is common that the metaphysical or occult communities will know that something works without scientific proof – only to have it explained scientifically ten or even hundreds of years later.

Dr Valerie Hunt says on her website at valeriehunt.com :

We can create the bioscalar energy inside our bodies with conscious thought to manipulate the environmental electromagnetism in the air we breathe. With intention we focus this energy to any part of the body. Furthermore we direct it to do specific work such as stop inflammation, eliminate pain, stop bleeding and destroy infection.

There are many theories about how Reiki works ranging from acts of god to pseudoscientific explanations. I’d like to stay away from filling in what we don’t know with ‘god’ or other supernatural causes and instead, use a more plausible theory.

Given what we know of energy and energetic anatomy and given the above characteristics of Reiki, I propose the following theory of how Reiki works :

‘Universal Energy’ is a subatomic force or fabric that gives thought substance and a means to move forward. It is the space between atoms. The subatomic world is without time or space constraints.
Dis-ease, dis-harmony, un-wellness occurs due to disruptions and blockages in the natural flow of life energy within the body.

Energy healing is the practice of using our thoughts, which exist suspended in this Universal Energy and our natural energy channels, to direct life energy to flow into and/or through an illness or dis-ease.
Reiki, emanating more strongly than usual from the practitioner’s hands due to a conscious practice, reminds the recipient’s body of the appropriate flow of it’s life force and begins that flow again, returning the body to a state of health and wellness
