Often, energy is thought up as something that is less than real or imaginary. What is referred to as energy, in actuality, is a less dense state of matter. Most of us are familiar with the most dense states of matter – solid, liquid, gas and plasma. What we refer to as ‘energy’ is simply less dense with varying properties.

I often tell the story that when I went through physical science in middle school, plasma wasn’t taught as a state of matter but by the time I got to high school, it was. Science is always discovering new things – even stats of matter. In the 1920s, a state of matter called a condensate was theorized. In 2003, it was finally created in a lab. Perhaps it will be another 80 years before it is taught in the general course of things.

In the mean time, metaphysics holds many definitions of matter and how that matter interacts. Metaphysics is often ahead of science because it is almost the meeting ground of reason and imagination, however, it is still important to remember to proceed with new metaphysical theories with caution, retain our logical faculties.

Energy is defined differently in different scientific disciplines:
physics – the amount of work a physical system can do on another
chemistry – the potential for substances to undergo transformations or transform other substances
biology – the potential of organisms to undergo or cause a change in their form or function
Earth science – the potential of various constituents of the planet Earth to influence one another
cosmology – energy transformations in the universe beyond the planet Earth

Newton gave us the theory that energy and matter are extensions of each other with the mass energy equivalency theory : Mass Energy Equivalency – Newton’s theory of E = mc^2 – E is energy, m is mass, and c is the speed of light in a vacuum, which is 299,792,458 meters per second.

It’s safe to say, that the definition of energy needs to be changed to reflect it’s usage in a particular discipline however, that does not leave room to define it as any fantasy creation we can dream up.

Energy, is a substance or force that is defined and proven by science. When we give it a definition for our use, we will refrain from making up a fictional substance and stick to realistic probability! :)

For our purposes, we will define energy in the following way, which is not contradictory to the known properties of energy but simply describes it in a more applicable way.

Energy : Matter that is less dense than plasma and is less constrained by time and space than plasma
