Energy

Included in the Blue Fire Reiki Manuals and the Etherscapes Collection

Often, energy is thought up as something that is less than real or imaginary. What is referred to as energy, in actuality, very real, not mystical in nature, conforms to all existing natural law and can and has been studied scientifically.

I often tell the story that when I went through physical science in middle school, plasma wasn’t taught as a state of matter but by the time I got to high school, it was. That doesn’t mean that plasma wasn’t a state of matter when I was in middle school. It just means that it wasn’t commonly accepted knowledge yet. Plasma was actually ‘discovered’ as a state of matter in 1879 by Sir William Crookes. 110 years later, it still wasn’t common enough knowledge to be taught in school.

In the 1920s, a state of matter called a condensate was theorized. In 2003, it was finally created in a lab. Today, in 2011, no one has heard about it, as earth shattering as a new state of matter might seem. Perhaps it will be another 80 years before the state of matter known as ‘condensate’ is taught in the general course of things.

The point being that science is always discovering new things – even states of matter. The new things that science discovers already existed –they just weren’t identified or defined by a scientific process yet. And even once something is studied or discovered scientifically, it sometimes takes centuries for it to become common knowledge.

In the mean time, metaphysics is a branch of theoretical knowledge that holds many definitions of matter and how that matter interacts. Metaphysics is often ahead of science. For instance, metaphysicists have known of the existence of plasma (the first level of ‘energy’) for hundreds of years. Metaphysics offers us the opportunity to perceive things that science has not yet categorized and theorize about how they might work. However, it is still important to remember to proceed with new metaphysical theories with caution, retain our logical faculties.

Energy is defined differently in different scientific disciplines :

  • physics – the amount of work a physical system can do on another
  • chemistry – the potential for substances to undergo transformations or transform other substances
  • biology – the potential of organisms to undergo or cause a change in their form or function
  • Earth science – the potential of various constituents of the planet Earth to influence one another
  • cosmology – energy transformations in the universe beyond the planet Earth

So, while it’s safe to say, that the definition of energy needs to be changed to reflect it’s usage in a particular discipline, that does not leave room to define it as any fantasy creation we can dream up. When we give it a definition for our use, we will refrain from making up a fictional substance and stick to realistic probability! :) For our purposes, we will define energy in the following way, which is not contradictory to the known properties of energy but simply describes it in a more applicable way.

Energy – Matter that is less dense than plasma and is less constrained by time and space than plasma
