Pendulum of Change
Humans learn by seeing, modeling, mimicking. And when we don’t have a role model, we try something on.
When you notice an undesirable behavior in yourself that you’d like to change, it is normal and natural to feel repulsed from that behavior. If you are lacking a model and try a different behavior on, it is therefore normal and natural to try on a complete opposite behavior.
And so, it is normal to go from one extreme in a behavior to the very opposite extreme in looking for it’s remedy or the behavior that the person feels at peace with.
You are likely to find that the opposite extreme doesn’t work very well either – it isn’t often that an extreme hot or cold, black or white DOES work. So it’s ok to swing back in the other direction and maybe back again – maybe a few times, until you settle into a happy medium that works for you.
